It seems that four years after the release of the NVidia Shield TV we could have a new version of this popular Android console on the way. The evidences of this new model arise when thanks to a ROM developer that has discovered references to two new controllers, “stormcaster” for a new gamepad and “friday” for a new remote control. Some accessories that could accompany a new version of this Shield TV. Is time to have a change at SoC level in this device, giving the jump to a smaller one with a greater energy efficiency.
In fact NVidia has spoken in this matter and through a statement confirmed that these new “codenames” belong to new product concepts that may be in active or inactive development.
It’s fairly standard practice for various concept codenames to appear in source code. Those references remain even when it becomes unlikely that the concept ever goes into production. We can’t comment on which codenames refer to product concepts that are active vs which ones are inactive, as it can be fluid. However, I can confirm that none of the codenames below refer to products that have launched publicly.
The NVidia Shield TV is one of our most recommended Android TV and despite all the time it has been on the market it continues to receive updates that improve its software. Without doubt if the development of a new version of the Shield is confirmed, we will be facing one of the best news of this year for this sector.
