Google has unveiled the new Google Fitbit Edge, a high-end fitness tracker that offers improvements in design, hardware, and repairability compared to the previous version.
Built on a recycled aluminum chassis with 5 ATM water resistance (up to 50 meters) and IP68 rating, this device stands out as the company’s first band with a modular internal architecture, which makes it easier to replace the battery and extend the product’s lifespan. The device weighs just 17.7 grams and features a physical side button with haptic feedback for precise navigation during workout sessions.
The Fitbit Edge debuts the Google Health Coach feature powered by Gemini, which offers personalized, real-time workout tips.
Google Fitbit Edge, features
On the front, the Google Fitbit Edge features a 1.34-inch hybrid AMOLED display, with a viewing area 46% larger than previous generations and brightness optimized for outdoor use in direct sunlight. For tracking workouts, the Fitbit Edge is equipped with a standalone GPS chipset with 40% improved accuracy, a barometric altimeter to measure elevation changes, and support for more than 50 exercise modes with automatic activity detection.
In terms of biometric features, it offers a heart rate sensor, on-demand electrocardiogram (ECG), skin temperature sensor, and the Health Guardian suite, which is designed to detect variations in health patterns and signs of atrial fibrillation. In addition to health metrics, the wristband supports turn-by-turn navigation with Google Maps, media playback controls, and integration with phone notifications.
In terms of battery life, the device promises up to 7 days of standard use (which drops to about 2 days if the Always-on Display mode is kept active), with a magnetic fast-charging system capable of providing a full day’s worth of battery life in just 5 minutes.
