We already have the new Amazon Fire TV Cube streaming player available for now only in the US, as always it will still be slow to reach other countries in the first Amazon area such as the UK, Germany or Japan and probably never reach countries where it does not work the voice service of Alexa. This new Amazon device is aimed at streaming content and its basic hardware does not differ much from the Amazon Fire TV Stick. The differences are given, in the addition to its cube-shaped design, the inclusion of an internal speaker with microphone and the integration of Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant.
Netflik 4K, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, Hulu and other streaming services will be the main use environment of the system, unfortunately we still have the limitations to see YouTube, which can only be viewed through the web browser.
SoC, RAM and storage
The new Amazon Fire TV Cube includes as a core a SoC Quad Core from AMlogic, specifically the S905Z, a variant of the well-known S905X that includes licenses for audio pass through for DD and DTS up to 7.1 and that has support for 4K video output at 60fps and HDR10. We also have 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and 16 GB of eMMc storage memory, enough for a team oriented to streaming content, usually Amazon only includes 8 GB of storage memory.
Other specifications
At the level of wireless connectivity the Amazon Fire TV Cube has WiFi 802.11ac dual-band MIMO and Bluetooth. In terms of connectivity, the new Amazon model is still in line with this brand, very limited connectivity, we only have a microUSB 2.0 port, a jack for an IR port extender and an HDMI 2.0a video output. Fortunately, Amazon has included an external 10/100 Ethernet adapter in the pack.
Amazon Fire TV Cube also includes the same Bluetooth remote with integrated microphone found on the Fire TV Stick with Alexa assistant that can remotely control lights, a speaker system or other compatible smart home devices. The operating system as always will be FireOS an extremely customized version of Android that focuses on the Amazon ecosystem.
Price and availability in stores
- Amazon Fire TV Cube currently can only be purchased in Amazon.com for $119.99, although Prime users in that country have an additional discount of $30. Shipments begin on June 21.
