Qualcomm has officially announced the launch of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 mobile platforms, designed for the mid-range and entry-level markets.
Both platforms are based on a 4nm architecture, representing a significant leap in energy efficiency and processing power. These new processors feature high-end capabilities such as Wi-Fi 7 connectivity and ultra-high-resolution AI photography. Qualcomm is also introducing Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI technology, which aims to deliver smooth navigation and instant app responsiveness.
As expected, they also promise extensive AI capabilities to optimize everything from battery management to photo post-processing and the stability of 5G connections.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5: Power and Advanced Connectivity
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 (SM6850) offers an interesting option in the upper mid-range. Its CPU features eight cores: four performance cores clocked at 2.6 GHz and four efficiency cores at 2.0 GHz. It reportedly delivers a 20% improvement in app launch speed and an 18% reduction in screen stuttering. On the graphics side, its enhanced Adreno GPU delivers 21% better performance than its predecessor, which, combined with the Qualcomm Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, aims to improve the user experience.
In terms of connectivity and multimedia, this SoC now offers Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0, reaching wireless speeds of up to 5.8 Gbps. Its Spectra image signal processor (ISP) supports camera sensors up to 200 MP, enabling advanced features such as AI-powered Night Vision and 100x digital zoom with texture enhancement. Additionally, it supports FHD+ resolution displays at a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz. It features USB-C 2.0 connectivity and UFS 3.1 storage.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 5: Enhancing the entry-level range
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 (SM4850) is designed for more affordable smartphones. It features an octa-core architecture with two performance cores clocked at 2.4 GHz and six efficient cores for battery savings. What’s interesting about this new SoC is its 77% improvement in Adreno GPU performance, making this platform a viable option for gaming. We may see it in affordable Android handhelds in the future.
This SoC supports cameras up to 108 MP and FHD+ displays with refresh rates up to 144 Hz. It features Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) support for 5G and 4G, allowing the use of two data lines simultaneously. However, it retains more conservative features such as Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1. This is a platform designed to maximize battery life by adjusting power consumption. It also includes USB-C 2.0 connectivity and storage compatible with UFS 3.1.
