Amlogic S905X5M. New SoC, specifications and comparison

Today we have information of a new Amlogic S905X5M SoC, a somewhat trimmed version in certain aspects of the already known S905X5 that we are still waiting for.

This low power version offers a Quad Core configuration based on ARM Cortex-A55 cores and an improved ARM Mali-G310 V2 GPU. As we can see this is a somewhat trimmed version of the recently announced S905X5 that we are still waiting for, the latter is expected to mount Cortex-A510 cores and a more powerful GPU such as the Mali G310 V5. So the Amlogic S905X5M looks like the classic SoC for the somewhat lower end of boxes.

Luckily this SoC is manufactured in 6 nm, a considerable improvement in its process that will imply a superior performance without reaching the thermal limit.

Specifications of the Amlogic S905X5M

As we can see, the Amlogic S905X5M scheme is quite interesting and will offer similar features to the Amlogic S905X4. We have performance improvements, especially in the GPU and new HDMI 2.1 instructions that will mean a more satisfactory user experience. On the other hand, it should be noted that it does not have USB 3.0, thus losing speed for external drives.

HDMI 2.1 features added

  • QMS (Quick Media Switching) – refresh switching between 60 Hz and 24 Hz.
  • VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) – frame adjustments to eliminate lag, stutter and tearing.
  • QFT (Quick Frame Transport) – speed increase between videos to avoid lag.
  • SBTM (Source-Based Tone Mapping) – HDR settings depending on your screen.

In terms of performance, this SoC offers a fairly high speed of 2.5 GHz, thanks to its 6 nm manufacturing process. The operating system surprises us with Android U which is Android 14, a significant step up from Android 11. We hope that this time it will offer us Android 64bit natively and not the 32bit in which Amlogic has been anchored for years.

Comparison S805X4 vs S905X5M

We can see in the figures provided by SEI Robotics that we have a considerable improvement, with an average of 25% in CPU and figures of almost 130% in GPU.

As we can see in the demo videos of this SoC we have tangible improvements in fluidity in content playback. Something that will be reflected when using streaming applications.

Devices with Amlogic S905X5M

SEI Robotics has distributed images of a generic box design for this SoC. It is likely to be used by Homatics as can be seen in the demo videos of this new processor, although it is sure to be available under multiple brands soon. They will also have DRM certifications for Netflix and Dolby audio systems, this will avoid compatibility issues.
