ANBERNIC RG552 a powerful and expensive retro console with RK3399 SoC

We already have available in stores the new retro ANBERNIC RG552, a laptop that surprises us by its price, too expensive for what it offers.

The ANBERNIC RG552 is based on a SoC that is not exactly last generation, since it is from 2016, the Rockchip RK3399. A fairly powerful Soc capable of running N64, Dreamcast and PSP emulators in a decent way, although it will certainly not be up to the task of emulating the Nintendo GameCube and Wii, as advertised by the brand. This Anbernic has dual operating system with Android 7.1 in the internal memory and Linux Batocera via micro SD so we can run all kinds of emulators.

The screen is one of its strong points, as it has a good resolution and includes a pair of speakers and two vibration motors to point out some extra. A retro that would have been much more interesting if it had opted for a more current SoC as the Powkiddy X18S has done, which among other things has less heating problems and a much more recent Android version 11.

ANBERNIC RG552

SoC, RAM and storage

Inside the ANBERNIC RG552 we have the Hexa Core Rockchip RK3399 SoC with two ARM Cortex-A72 cores, 4 ARM Cortex-A53 processors and a GPU is a Mali-T860 MP4 that includes native H.265 and VP9 video decoding up to 4K@30fps resolutions with support for HLG HDR. This SoC is fan-cooled and we have tested its power in some review.

It also has on board 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64 GB of high speed eMMc 5.1 storage memory where Android is installed. We also have two micro SD card readers, one to run Linux Batocera and a second one that we can use for data storage or games.

Other specifications

The screen of the ANBERNIC RG552 is a 5.36-inch touchscreen IPS OCA laminated with a resolution of 1920 x 1152 pixels and an aspect ratio of 5:3. For wireless connectivity we have only WiFi b/g/n, no Bluetooth. Regarding connectors we have a USB Type-C 3.0 port, 3.5 mm audio jack, and a mini HDMI 1.4 video output. The battery is 2×3200 mAh and includes 30 W fast charging.

Pricing and availability

  • The ANBERNIC RG552 retro console can be purchased on AliExpress and Banggood.com only for $230 / €203.32 with free shipping on its basic version using the store’s discount coupons and discount code 120708 on Aliexpress.
