Lossless Scaling. More Frames in your games. Configuration and Use

Today we are going to review how to get more frames per second in our games with Lossless Scaling, an app that can be very useful.

This software allows us to add frame generation to your game, regardless of the rendering API. We can also do upscaling using various image enhancement techniques. Undoubtedly a point to value if we want to improve performance on a somewhat limited hardware.

This app can be useful to gain frames in our mini PC or handheld PC like the Steam Deck.

Configure Lossless Scaling

To be able to use Lossless Scaling we have to always activate the full screen without borders, full screen with window or floating window option. In the main window of the app we have a “Defaultprofile on the left, but we can create others for each of our games. Then we have other options that we will see as Scaling Mode, Scaling Type and Frame Generation.

This method will NOT work with exclusive full screen.

Scaling Mode

In this option Scaling Mode we have two options, Auto and Custom. By default we can leave Auto, but in Custom we have more options that allow us to adjust the scaling manually. Click on resize before scaling so that the window is resized instead of zooming in the game with a magnifying glass effect.

To scale up, select the game or application you want to scale up and press CONTROL ALT S , pressing these keys again disables it. You can change this hotkey combination in Settings.

  • Recommended: Leave it on Automatic / Aspect Ratio

Scaling Types (Antialiasing)

The best Type of scaling or edge smoothing (Antialiasing) depends on your visual preferences and the type of game you are playing. For pixelated games, Integer or Nearest Neighbor scaling will give the best results. For games with 3D graphics, AMD FSR, NVIDIA Image Scaling, LS1 or xBR may be best. LS1 offers better scaling results, but it can be too sharp and cause vertex artifacts.

We have in this option Sharpness slider to adjust the level of sharpness and a performance mode if we have a less powerful hardware.

  • Recommended: Disabled, we can control this by ourselves in the game.
  • Alternative: Use AMD FSR / NVIDIA IS according to your specific hardware or use LS1.

Frame generation with Lossless Scaling

This is the most attractive point of the app, with the Frame Generation we will activate the interpolation of frames or the generation of frames without scaling.

It is necessary to limit the FPS of the game to half the refresh rate of the monitor. In case you have the monitor at 60 Fps you have to lock the game at solids 30 Fps.

You can limit the FPS using the game settings, the driver software or programs like RTSS. After setting the frame generation, you can increase the scaling using the scale button or hotkey.

  • Recommended: Activate the latest version of LSFG and set X2 or X3 mode .
  • Latency: In X3 mode the latency is quite noticeable, we recommend X2.
  • Note: On processors with integrated GPU like AMD and Intel enable Performance Mode.

Additional tips

  • When using frame generation, disable all overlays such as RTSS, Steam overlay, Nvidia overlay and AMD overlay, as they can interfere with the process.
  • Turn on Nvidia Reflex in programs like Special K and RTSS if available, because it helps with latency.
  • It is better to play with a controller, its lower responsiveness compared to a mouse will improve the feeling of lag.
  • In the Render tab disable everything except Draw FPS. If you encounter any problems, disable them.
  • Enhanced Sync, Fast Sync and Adaptive Sync features do not work.
  • Add LosslessScaling.exe to the NVIDIA control panel / app and change “Vulkan/OpenGL present method” to “Prefer layer on DXGI Swapchain”.
  • If you have a second monitor it is best to turn it off. It may interfere with Lossless Scaling.
