Netflix periodically purges compatible devices; soon we will have a new wave that will affect about 87 million devices.
The new restriction will take effect on March 2, so you need to have an alternative ready. Among the most notable products that will no longer be compatible are the PS3 console and 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs, as well as Smart TVs with operating systems that are around 11 years old. According to the company, this compatibility limitation is being applied due to compatibility and security issues. Many of these devices have completely outdated systems that have not been supported for some time.
In addition, the evolution of video codecs also marks a turning point. When new encoding systems are adopted, some hardware does not support these new techniques. By eliminating these playback systems, the company has to recode less of its content with older codecs and saves bandwidth. The trend in the future is to move all content to AV1 or other free codecs.

Error R40 on Netflix, unsupported hardware
Devices that are no longer compatible will display error R40. If we see this message on the screen, unfortunately we will not be able to view this streaming service. The exact message is as follows:
“Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device starting March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledevices for a list of compatible devices. (R40)”
If you have an incompatible streaming device, you will only be able to replace it with another one to continue watching Netflix. However, if you have a smart TV, you will only need to connect a certified compatible TV box or TV stick to continue using this app on your screen.
