R98 MINI, Basic and colorful Box with RK3318 SoC

It’s been a long time since we saw a new box with the Rockchip RK3318 SoC on AliExpress, and today we break that trend with the new R98 MINI.

It is a small entry-level Box with Android 9 with a plastic box with a hexagonal design and available in 5 different colors that does not stand out in any of its internal components. With it we can use KODI without problems, most of the IPTV-type applications without problems. For games, the R98 MINI is not the most recommended box, since its GPU is not very powerful and it is not suitable for use in the apps of paid streaming platforms such as Netflix, since it is not certified.

SoC, RAM and storage

The small Smart Box R98 MINI integrates as a core the Rockchip RK3318 SoC that has four ARM Cortex-A53 CPUs capable of reaching 1.5 Ghz and a Mali-450 MP5 GPU that includes native H.265 and VP9 video decoding up to 4K @ 60fps resolutions with support for HDR. As always, the SoC is cooled by only one heatsink, so this Box does not emit any noise. It has versions with 2/4 GB of DDR3 RAM and 16/32 GB of eMMc storage memory that we can expand by adding a memory card in the micro SD card reader that is on the side of its plastic box.

In the field of wireless connections, this TV-Box has Dual Band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 in all its versions. On the sides of the box we have a USB 3.0 port, another USB 2.0, 10/100 network connector, jack for analogue audio and video output, SPDIF digital audio output and an HDMI 2.0a port that allows output up to video resolutions 4K @ 60fps. The classic IR remote control, power supply and an HDMI cable are included to start using this Smart Box from the first moment.
