Today we present our comparative with benchmarks for the new Mediatek Helio X20 (MT6797) SoC against the rest of SoC in the current market used in several tablets and smartphones. This SoC Deca Core from Mediatek features ARM Cortex-A72 and Cortex-A53 processors and integrates a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU that allows native H.265 and VP9 video decoding up to 4K@30fps with 10 bit color support.

A SoC installed in a good number of tablets and we think is interesting to see it in detail in this comparison.

Mediatek Helio X20 specifications

Testing hardware

To perform the analysis of this SoC we will use the Binai G10Max tablet includes the Soci of Mediatek Helio X20 a Deca Core with 2 processors ARM Cortex-A72 cores and eight Cortex-A53 and a GPU ARM Mali-T880mp4 at 780mhz of maximum speed. The RAM is 3/4 GB, the storage is 32/64 GB and also includes 8000 mAh battery, Dual Band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and integrates a modem with support for 2G / 3G / 4G Cat networks. 6 with DUAL SIM. The screen is a 10.1-inch IPS with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, is accompanied by a 3MP front camera and a back with 13MP flash. In terms of connectivity we have a audio jack, a microUSB port, a microSD card reader and two speakers on the sides.

General specifications

As we can see in the specifications table the Mediatek Helio X20 SoC is manufactured at 20nm and has a cluster of two powerful Cortex-A72 cores and two other low consumption clusters Cortex-A53 at different speeds, the graphic section is under the control of the Mali-T880 MP4 GPU that allows us to run any powerful game on Android. As we see we have model for all types of connections, support LPDDR3 memory at 800MHz up to 4GB, it is compatible with storage memory eMMC 5.1 and the camera controller reaches 32MP with 4K resolution up to 30fps.

CPU

The new Mediatek Helio X20 Deca Core SoC we have a cluster with two ARM Cortex-A72 cores up to 2.1 GHz, a Quad Core Cortex A-53 cluster up to 1.85GHz and a similar one that reaches up to 1.4GHz. As we can see, the maximum speed detected is somewhat higher in the A-72 nuclei, but that does not indicate that we will use it.

GPU

At the graphic level we have a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU with support for OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 1.2 and DirectX 11.2, a GPU that came out in 2016 and that continues to defend itself correctly. At the VPU level, it has video decoding support for H.265 and VP9 codecs at 10 bit of color but it is not specified until what level, something that we will see in detail in the reviews of the devices.

Android system

The SoC has support for Android 8.0 64bit (API 26) but it is assumed that continue to evolve to at least one version, the kernel that controls the system is 3.18.60, a old version that may not evolve to v.4.

Performance tests

We perform several performance tests with the Mediatek Helio X20 SoC and we make a VS against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425, 660, Kirin 950, 960, Mediatek MT6753, MT8163, MT8173, MT8176 and Helio X20 (MT6797), a representative option on many tablets today.

Antutu

Possibly the best known test to get an idea of the overall performance of the device and compare to others.

Geekbench

A test that gives us some very interesting values of the gross power of the CPU in mono core and multi core.

3DMark

The graphical performance test par excellence with a fairly solid continuity in terms of results which helps us when comparing the performance of GPUs historically.

PCMark

This test gives us an idea of the power level of desktop applications of this hardware performing tasks such as video editing, managing text or audio files, something that is increasingly used in Android.

Conclusions

As we see the Mediatek Helio X20 SoC has a quite interesting performance with respect to the competition and that is why it is winning a space in the new tablets with graphics power needs. As is logical, its main attraction is the price with respect to the same Huawei and Qualcomm solutions, although the latter brand with its Snapdragon 660 is going to make things difficult for Mediatek, although for now the only manufacturer that has mounted this SoC in its tablets is Xiaomi with its Xiaomi Mi Pad 4. Undoubtedly interesting times again in the Android tablet sector, we will see where this SoC is in a few months but for now it defends well.
