MINIX SF16T, Review: 16″ IPS FHD+ portable touchscreen monitor

The MINIX SF16T is a new portable monitor from MINIX with a 16-inch screen and interesting specifications, which we will review today.

The MINIX brand is back with force as we have seen these days, with a new catalog of mini PCs, chargers and very interesting peripherals. This time we present its 16″ touch screen with 1200p resolution, HDR support and compact design. In addition, we have a 100% sRGB color scale, USB-C connectivity and FreeSync support, perfect for use anywhere. This monitor also has integrated stand and two speakers in the rear area.

Description

This MINIX SF16T monitor comes well protected in cork and comes with the necessary accessories to use it to its full capacity. We have two USB-C cables, one of them only for charging, HDMI cable, MINIX P1 mini charger 33 W and USB-A cable. In addition we also find a complete manual and a very tight case for transport and protection.

This MINIX SF16T monitor offers a very sober design with narrow frames, only in the lower area we have a slightly thicker frame. On the inside we have non-slip rubber pads for when we support it on the table.

On the sides we have all the ports and controls, on one side we have the full USB-C ports, audio jack and HDMI 1.4 connector. On the opposite side we have the control buttons and USB-A connector. In the stand area we have 2 speakers of 1 W with a fairly powerful sound.

• USB-A: Connecting the screen via USB-C works as a HUB, it is possible to have a wireless adapter for keyboard mouse and it works when using the screen.

In the rear area of the MINIX SF16T monitor we have an integrated support that allows an inclination between 10 and 30º. A very practical and solid system that also does not take up extra space.

We connect and turn on the MINIX SF16T monitor testing its USB-C and HDMI 1.4 ports, as we have been able to verify the system detects perfectly at 1200p resolution and 60Hz. The system also detects HDR options well, but the results are somewhat basic with a power of 300 nits.

Connectivity

This monitor can be connected in multiple ways, with a single USB-C cable to a mini PC like the MINIX NEO Z100, mobile or any USB 3.2 compatible device with video output. We can also use it with a powerbank to power it independently with the amazing MINIX C1 or H1 wireless adapter. This monitor is compatible with FreeSync systems, an interesting point to get the most out of the monitor.

On-screen menus

This touchscreen monitor allows us to control it by pressing on screen or through the buttons on the side, in its OSD system we have information of the active connections, image quality control and output port. In addition, we have FreeSync system activation, HDR system and Gaming mode.

Performance testing

Panel and Sound

The MINIX SF16T monitor offers good image quality, vivid colors and homogeneous contrast between areas. We did not notice light leaks or inhomogeneous illumination defects, during calibration tests there were no noticeable defects.

Where we noticed some limitation is in the quality of HDR, something logical having a power of 300 cd/m² with 8 bits. We have good viewing angles thanks to the IPS panel that mounts this system. The touch control is adequate, especially if we connect a mobile or system designed for that control. The MINIX SF16T monitor is compatible with AMD FreeSync synchronization system, which ensures good image quality without horizontal cuts(tearing). In order to activate this system you must have the latest drivers installed, otherwise the control panel will tell you that it is not compatible and you will not be able to activate it.

Once we have tested the MINIX SF16T monitor we can say that the sensations that it has transmitted us have been good. Thanks to its features we have a screen with good capabilities, with an IPS panel with good angles, resolution up to 1920 x 1200 and 100% sRGB color gamut. As is logical we noticed that it falls short in power in HDR, something normal for its price and light output.

Undoubtedly the monitor stands out for the complete USB-C connectivity, with a single cable we have a USB HUB monitor which is very practical. We also have touch control in this version, which allows us to make direct use of the screen. We were also surprised by the sound of its speakers, with quite decent audio. This monitor also includes extra features such as AMD FreeSync to avoid tearing in games.

We can say that the MINIX SF16T is a quality portable monitor. A screen that offers good compatibility with connectivity technologies to use it in multiple ways.
